The Curls

Type of curls

There are different types of curly hair, from 2A to 2C (curly wavy), 3A to 3C (curly), and 4A to 4C (very curly). Your curl type is determined by the shape of your hair follicles, with very curly hair having an elliptical shape, while curly and wavy hair has a more rounded shape. Identifying your curl type and using the right products in your curly hair routine will definitely help enhance the beauty of your hair.

Hair Chart

To better understand your curl type and how to care for your hair, the hair chart is an illustration of the various hair patterns or hair types.

Type 4: Curly Hair

4A: Kinky curls with a wider spiral pattern.

4B: Zigzag curls, need constant hydration.

4C: Very tight, fragile curls that require a lot of hydration and care.

Type 3 - Curly Hair:

  • 3A: Defined curls with a wider spiral pattern.
  • 3B: Tighter curls with a spiral pattern, tending to dry out and knot easily.
  • 3C: Very tight curls with a corkscrew spiral pattern, tending to dry out and knot easily.

  • Type 2 - Wavy Hair:
  • 2A: Wavy with an S-shaped pattern, usually wider waves.
  • 2B: Wavy with a more defined S-shaped pattern, tending to be frizzier.
  • 2C: Wavy with an S-shaped pattern, with a greater tendency to frizz.

Porosity

Porosity for curly hair refers to the curls' ability to absorb and retain moisture. Hair can be low, medium, or high porosity, and someone with curly hair might have a combination of these. Damaged or chemically treated hair is often high porosity, which is why most products designed for these hair types are formulated to strengthen and repair it.

Curly Girl Method (CGM)

The Curly Girl Method is one of several hair care regimens specifically designed for naturally curly hair. It involves the use of Curly Girl Method-approved products, which exclude certain ingredients like sulfates, silicones, and drying alcohol. The Curly Girl Method, or CGM, can be adapted to fit any curly hair routine!

LOC, LCO or LOG Method

Since type 4 curls tend to suffer from dryness, the LOC method, which stands for Liquid Cream Oil (LCO, or Liquid Cream Gel - LOG), is the process of applying styling products to lock in moisture. Using a combination of water, leave-in conditioner, curl cream, oils, butters, or gels helps seal in moisture.
