Curly Hair Dictionary
The Curls
Type of hedgehogs
There are different types of curly hair, from 2A to 2C wavy curls, from 3A to 3C curly, and from 4A to 4C very curly. Your curl type is determined by the shape of the hair follicles, with tightly curled hair having an elliptical shape, while wavy and curly hair has a more rounded shape. Identifying your curl type and using the right products in your curly hair routine will definitely help to enhance the beauty of your hair.
Hair Chart
To better understand your curl type and how to care for your hair, the hair chart is an illustration of the various hair patterns or hair types.
Type 4: Curly Hair
4A: Frizzy curls with a wider spiral pattern.
4B: Zigzag curls, need constant hydration.
4C: Very tight curls, fragile, require a lot of hydration and care.
Type 3 - Curly Hair:
- 3A: Defined curls with a wider spiral pattern.
- 3B: Tighter curls with a spiral pattern, tendency to dry out and tangle easily.
- 3C: Very tight curls with a corkscrew spiral pattern, tendency to dry out and tangle easily.
- Type 2 - Wavy Hair:
- 2A: Wavy with an S-shaped pattern, usually wider waves.
- 2B: Wavy with a more defined S-shaped pattern, tendency to be frizzier.
- 2C: Wavy with an S-shaped pattern, with a greater tendency to frizz.
Porosity
Porosity for curly hair indicates the ability of curls to absorb and retain moisture. Hair can have low, medium, or high porosity, and a person with curly hair may have a combination of these. Damaged hair or hair subjected to chemical treatments is often high porosity, which is why most products intended for these types of hair are formulated to strengthen and repair them.
Curly Girl Method( CGM)
The Curly Girl Method is one of the various hair care regimes specifically created for naturally curly hair. It includes the use of products approved by the Curly Girl Method, which exclude the use of certain ingredients such as sulfates, silicones, and drying alcohol. The Curly Girl Method, or CGM, can be adapted to fit into any routine for curly hair!
LOC, LCO OR LOG Method
Since type 4 curls tend to suffer from dryness, the LOC method, which stands for Liquid Cream Oil (LCO, or Liquid Cream Gel - LOG), is the process by which styling products are applied to keep the hair hydrated. Using a combination of water, leave-in conditioner, curl cream, oils, butters, or gel helps to seal in moisture.
